Breast Augmentation View Photos

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to increase the size and change the shape of breasts. Breast augmentation will make the breasts larger however the surgery will not create cleavage or lift sagging breasts. The only way to create cleavage is with a bra. The best treatment for breast ptosis or sagging is with the various types of lifts that are available. Breast augmentation will help patients who desire a fuller chest and women who have lost breast volume due to pregnancy or nursing. There are many reasons for considering breast augmentation.

  • Increase breast size and enhance body shape by balancing the size of the breasts with the hips if the breasts are too small.
  • to correct post partum involution of the breasts or to Increase breast size after pregnancy and nursing

General Procedure

Breast augmentation is performed through a small incision on various parts of the breast to insert a breast implant. The surgery is  performed on an outpatient basis at a hospital or my state-of-the-art surgical center Day Plastic Surgery located at 1035 Park Ave. in New York. The surgery center has AAAASF accreditation which is strict and rigorous and provides you with maximum safety and comfort. We are better than the hospital. The procedure takes around 2 hours to perform.

The selection of the type and size of the implant is one of the most important parts of the process. This is performed in conjunction with you the patient through a discussion of your desires, imaging and various other maneuvers. Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia for maximum comfort and safety.  There are several possible locations for the small incision that will be used for inserting the breast implant. This includes the infra mammary, periareolar and axillary incisions. The infra mammary is located at the crease between the natural lower fold of the breast and the chest wall. The periareolar is at the junction of the pigmented skin of the areola and the breast. The axillary is in a crease in the arm pit. The scarring is variable and final healing and scars have a lot do do with individual predisposition to scarring rather than location.

During the procedure a pocket is created under the breast tissue, also called  subglandular, or beneath the chest wall muscle, also called submuscular. When the pocket is beneath the breast this is called a subglandular augmentation. When the pocket is beneath the muscle it is called a submuscular augmentation. There are specific medical indications for either approach. This can best be discussed with you after and evaluation and examination. Implants increase a woman's breast size by one or more bra cup sizes.  Implants typically contain a saline solution (similar to saltwater) or the implants can contain a silicone gel. The gels can be softer or harder also called the gummy bear implant.  There are many different profiles of implants available which include the moderate, moderate plus, moderate high profile, high profile and extra high profile. within each of these categories are also sub categories with various shapes and sizes. There are also anatomical implants which have different projections. In some circumstances, particularly those in which there is breast asymmetry (uneven breast size), an inflatable implant may be used to allow the surgeon to adjust the level of inflation to attain the best breast symmetry and balance. I have implants from all the various manufacturers available.

Recovery Process

Intra operatively I inject plenty of local anesthesia so you wake up very comfortably. I give you your prescriptions prior to the surgery so they can be filled and are ready for you at home when you come back. Patients are in the recovery room any where from 1 hour to slightly longer. I ask that you eat something when you get home and start your medications right away. Like this you will have a relatively pain free recovery process. You need to stay active after the surgery with walking. This will aid in the healing process and shorten the recovery time.  You should not be lifting heavy objects. Bandages are applied right after surgery to minimize bruising and movement of the breasts.  Once the bandages are removed, a bra will need to be worn for several weeks.  Patients sometimes report minor pain associated with the surgery although most of the time the post op period is painless if they follow my instructions fully.  This pain can be treated effectively with oral medication. Complications are rare.

I have a whole site allocated to the most common questions asked about breast augmentation called BREAST IMPLANTS 101. Please refer to this site for  more information.
